Family Room Reveal (ORC-Week 8)
Welcome, friends! I’m so happy to share the reveal of our Family Room makeover with you all today! We joined up with the One Room Challenge as motivation to get this space completed sooner than later. It’s always best for our family to have a deadline, or we might just have things lying around the house waiting to be finished for months and months. To tell you the truth, we have another project in progress, and I’m wishing that I had another One Room Challenge during the summer to complete that for, so thank you to all those behind the challenge. It truly is an exciting thing for designers to participate in!
Our Family Room has come together better than I had hoped for! Despite the slipcover saga, which you can read about here, we love how this space has turned out. All of the personal details, and hands on projects that are included only make it more special to us. It’s truly a testament that if you just try, you may be able to accomplish what you never thought you’d be able to.
I have a few more posts to go along with this space, that I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks. I never got around to sharing the build of the bookcases, and I think it’s something I’d like to share on here with you all. Okay, it’s time to reveal the space to you all!
We built all of that! I’m still in awe to be truthful. It was a test of our gathered abilities, and it worked out! There are flaws for sure, but who cares, we built that! The faux fireplace is a dream come true. The logs plug in and can run with or without heat, and since I’m in Texas, we rarely need heat most days, so I’m glad to have the option of enjoying the fire “look” without heat when I want a cozy looking night.
One of my favorite styling moments is on this bookcase. Can you guess? I love to decorate with found items from antique stores, or thrift shops. It gives such character to a space to incorporate something old with the new. I had these shelves filled before we were finished with the space, I was so excited to do it!
With such a large empty wall at the back of the room, I needed to find something to fill it, and adding more framed pictures wasn’t going to work, so I did the next best thing by hanging a large tapestry instead. It’s so beautiful, and such a find! I found it on Etsy for a steal! Speaking of Etsy, a lot of the pillow covers seen on our couch are from there. Check back a few posts for links to them, if you’re interested. And that chair in the corner, it’s a little chair from Target that I took apart and recovered with a furry blanket we’ve been holding on to for a while. It’s so cute, and the process of recovering was really easy.
Let’s talk about that slipcover, shall we? I mean, it’s a bit of a mess when you consider the color, but other than that, I’m so happy with how it turned out. Of course, I can’t not see the huge flaws caused by our bad dye job, so we’re going to try again, this time with a different fabric, already the color of our choice. If we did it once, I can only hope we can do it even better the second time around. Wish us luck, and in the meantime, we’ll be enjoying strategically placed pillows and throw. Ha!
More vintage mixed with new items can be found on our coffee table, which is also a piece I picked up at a local antique/craft mall. I wasn’t letting that baby go! I mean, look how adorable and versatile it is. The scalloped leaves, and the fact that it was the exact size I needed for the space meant I hovered over it even as I secured it to pay for it. Haha! I had thought about sanding it down and staining it a lighter color, but it’s grown on me in the time we’ve had it in our home, and I think I’m going to let it be.
I designed the family room to have two spaces. One section a sitting area, and the other a game/study/work area. You can see the location of the game/study/work area in relation to the sitting are in the last photo. It’s cozy, but works so much better than anything we’ve done up here before.
I wanted the space to have its own style, but something that would complement the sitting area, so I chose to sew a couple of plaid seat cushions to give the chairs a bit of pizazz. The brown tones blend nicely with the color of the couch and the surrounding space. A cute little gallery wall, with light included makes this space stand out.
That’s all for now, friends! Thank you all again for the support over the last couple of months, and for those of you that have been following along even longer, thank you so much for seeing something in me and this little blog that brings you back again, and again.
Now, if you have some time, head over to see all of the amazing spaces that have been transformed by the One Room Challenge designers and guest participants. My jaw has dropped to the floor a few times, and I know there’s something for everyone, so please enjoy!
