Family Room Styling (Week Two-ORC)
Hi there, friends! Welcome back! It’s week two of the One Room Challenge, and we’re still working away at preparing it for the big reveal. Normally I’d share renovation progress, but this challenge seems to be eight weeks instead of six so I have plenty of time to share it all, and the styling portion of this renovation is heavy on my mind, so today’s post is focused on some of the items I’ll be using to style the Family Room once it’s done. Some of the item links are used as representation of what I’ll actually use, and some are exact pieces. The best part, if you like them, they are available to shop!
Furniture
Due to the current shortage of product, and well, not wanting to pour a whole lot of money into the renovation, I’m doing my best to use furniture pieces I already own to decorate this space with. We have had the table and chairs set up as our homeschool station for a while, since we needed a dedicated space for our son to work at during the pandemic. I’m toying with the idea of smaller scale chairs, but these are pretty comfortable to sit in, and if this becomes a game space, we’ll want to be comfortable so they may stay. I spoke about our plans for the sectional in the last post, about how I plan to create a slipcover, or reupholster it myself. That’s going to save us a ton on money right now, and I’m all for the work that I’m going to have to put into getting it done. The armchair we’re going to use in the living space is a popular one. As I’m writing this it’s sold out, but I know for a fact that it comes back in stock every so often, so if you’re interested, be sure to sign up for alerts from the retailer to get first dips on the next set available. Next up, the coffee table. The linked tables are stand-ins for the one I actually found for our space. It’s so unique I haven’t been able to find another one like it to share, but these are close. I’m so excited to share it in the big reveal with y’all! I have a lot of ideas for a side table, the one shown above is a representation of the style I think I’ll be using, since I already have a piece similar to it. I think I might need a second larger table though, but it may make the space look a bit cluttered. Once I can get the furniture into place, I’ll test out the idea and let y’all know.
Lighting
The lamp, I’m in love with, but I think it needs a different shade. You’ll see that I photoshopped a cone shaped shade onto the base for the style board. I’m loving the vintage vibe it gives, but I’m open to finding an actual vintage lamp to use in its place. I just have to get out there and look for it! We’re going to replace the chandelier with a flush mount or semi-flush mount fixture since the room calls for one now. With the eyeline going up now with the new fireplace it doesn’t make sense to keep it the way it is. I’m also looking for sconces and possibly a plug in pendant light to hang over the game table and chairs. I have so many ideas I’ll probably focus more on them later in the series.
Textiles
Our rug! It’s perfect for this space! Originally I planned to use it downstairs, so I’ve had sitting rolled up, in our home for months now, but once I started planning this room, I just knew it would be perfect for this space! This next piece surprised me. I’m not sure why, but I got a wild hair right before the start of the challenge, to include a tapestry in our space. I searched high and low for the one you see in our style board, and since I did so much searching, I found plenty of other options that caught my eye too, one of which I’m sharing here today. Ours just arrived today, and I’ve yet to open the package to see what it looks like in person, but I’ll for sure be doing that tomorrow. If it does work out, I’ll let you know. With the tapestry and vintage pieces I’m using throughout the space, I find myself wanting to use more pattern than usual. I’ll do that by incorporating it in the pillows. I remember back in the early days of decorating our home, when I was too scared to spend money on pillows, but over the years, I’ve learned that they make one of the biggest impacts in telling a story in design, so though I’m considerate of cost, I tend to budget in more for them when style planning. The patterned curtains are dream curtains for my space. They are custom, and like pillows, custom drapery makes a huge impact in the overall look of a space. Unlike pillows, in my case, I have yet to get on board with the budget requirements to add them to any of my spaces. Maybe it’s because I redecorate so much? Who knows, maybe I’ll skip some other purchases, save up and one day I’ll add them, and leave them. Another thought, is to make them myself. I think if I can sew a slipcover for my couch, I must be able to sew curtains for my space, right? Have I mentioned that I’m still dreading that project? Actually I’m equally filled with dread and excitement. I hate to fail, and my design depends on this slipcover project going right, so I had better get to it soon, if I want to have it done in time for the big reveal, but learning a new skill puts a fire in me too, so I’m up for it. Again, wish me luck, please!
Accessories
I love using handmade pottery and ceramics to style. They don’t have to be fancy, or from somewhere special, it just has to speak to me. I always wonder what the back story is when I find a piece. Was it a hobby? Was it a career? Was it what they hoped it would be, or was it a fail? Am I the only one seeing the beauty in it? So many questions! That’s what so wonderful about handmade pieces! It’s truly an art. You’ll see plenty of my favorite pieces styled throughout the family room, once all is said and done, so I wanted to share some pieces with you that I found online that you all might like. I hope you do! I’ll also be styling with plenty of other vintage pieces I’ve found over time, as well as books, art, and grasses. I’m sure I’ll circle back around to accessories in a future post and share more then.
Electronics
Our TV. We love our TV downstairs so much that we got a second one for the family room. This one is much bigger, since we’ll mostly be watching movies up here, but it’s not so huge that it’s an eyesore, and the art feature helps it blend in too. My son loves having Alexa in this space. He likes listening to music while doing his independent work, so that’ll be staying as we’ve had it in here for a while now. My record player. With my ear issues, it has taken me some time to get back into the habit of listening to music around the house. It’s something I’ve always loved to do, before the ear issue came up. I think I’m ready to get back to it, and hope to pull out some records to listen to, so hopefully it’ll fit on our new bookcases. I didn’t really plan the design to accommodate it, so we will see.
My goodness, I could go on, but I bet you’re tired of reading by now. Before you go, take a look below at the items I linked up. I hope you enjoy them! Thanks again for stopping by today and visiting the blog!
