Renovations in the Guest Bedroom
Did a week just go by? How is that possible? If this is any indication of how the year is going to go, oh boy am I happy that I started working on this space a while back! That being said, I do think that most of what I’m going to share for the New Year, New Room Refresh Challenge, is possible to do in the span of a month. It may be that you’re working on it as much as possible each day to do it, but it can be done.
Here’s a reminder of the plan for the space.
After removing, and donating a ton of the stuff that was in the room, we started the renovation of the space by tearing out the old carpet. It was always going to have to be replaced after being a playroom, in which our child played with many sticky, and gooey toys. Slime being my biggest nemesis. There were a few spots, that even with careful, and extensive cleaning, wouldn’t come up. We tried, but ultimately decided a year ago, before it became a catchall room, that it would make sense to change out the flooring in the room along with the rest of the upstairs, so that they matched. We included it in the purchase of the other flooring, knowing we’d get to it when we got to it. In the meantime we’d store the flooring.
That’s how projects go around here, so if you imagine some pristine home when you think of my home, absolutely not. Not until all the big renovations are done. That’s just our reality, and why we’re pushing to get most of them done in the next two years.
Since we were familiar with how to install the flooring, having installed it in every other room of the upstairs, it went in quickly. Once we were half done with the floors, we thought it would be a good idea to work on filling in the space on the wall, left behind when we removed the double doors leading to the family room. I knew we’d need to apply texture to try and match the existing wall texture, and I wasn’t sure how big of a mess that would create, and of course really didn’t want to ruin the new flooring, so with the subfloors uncovered, it was the perfect opportunity. I feel like drywall tasks, like floating and taping, are my jam. It comes naturally to me, but texture was entirely new, and I was concerned with how it would turn out. We used a couple of different techniques to get the new texture to blend with the old, and I think it’s a close match, but certainly we will need to do more with it one day for a seamless match. This wasn’t the time for it though, and honestly saying that makes every fiber of my perfectionist being cringe. With primer and paint though, it’s hard to tell, unless you get right up on the wall. Not terrible for a first go at it. With that out of the way, we were able to finish the flooring pretty quickly, and we moved on to installing the baseboards, but during the process, the whole family got sick, and we haven’t finished them since. That’s the last big project for us to complete in this space. I’m hoping it’ll be done by next week’s post.
I’m still on the lookout for a piece of furniture to add to the space. I’ve been searching Marketplace, but have had no luck. We have a tv credenza in our primary bedroom, that we’re going to move out sometime this year, so we may end up using that if we don’t find anything else. I need to do some measuring before we do it though. I’d like the room to feel spacious and not cluttered, so something smaller scaled may be better. We will see!
Check back in with us next week, and be sure to visit my fellow participants to see what progress they have made.
