The Transition to Autumn Begins
Summer went by way too quickly, in my opinion. Normally I’m done with it about half way through, but this one was so different from past summers, with more family time, less vacation planning, and fewer home projects, though we did replace our fence ourselves, which was worth the time and money saved. Otherwise, this past summer was spent doing leisurely, and fulfilling activities. I could hold on to it forever. Thank goodness for memories!
Fall Calls
Of course, Autumn is my favorite time of the year, and has been call to me with its siren song. Can you blame for for following it’s song earlier than most? Actually, scratch that, I think so many of us are starting earlier than “normal” these days. Are you?
Simplicity is Best (for me)
Even though the stores are filled with fantastic fall decor pieces to choose from, most of my ideas are simple, indirect, and don’t require much effort to achieve, which I hope inspires you, and leaves you feeling less pressure to decorate for the the upcoming season. Here’s a quick look at what we have going on in our family room. Scratch that, this post is mostly focused on our coffee table, since that is the main area in the space that has seen changes since the summer.
Vintage Finds and a Floral Focal Point
I’ve been thrifting and searching antique shops for a while now, and have built a nice collection of interchangeable decor items to decorate and redecorate with at my leisure. Seeking out these pieces has brought me so much joy, but actually styling them and using them in my home is the real treat for me. This green glass vase was one of a few from my most recent finds, and I hadn’t intended on using it just yet, but as I was pulling together the faux flowers for my arrangement, it was all I could see arranging them in. I think I was right about this one too, because it looks better than I had imagined it would. The faux flowers are a mix I put together from some I have used in past arrangements, and a handful of faux flowers that I came across at Michael’s during a recent visit. Altogether they make a beautiful and romantic fall focal piece for our coffee table.
Speaking of, the coffee table is a vintage scalloped drop-leaf table, that I hope to refinish sooner than later, but has been holding space beautifully in our family room for a couple of years now. Since this is a smaller, recreation room, the fact that we can leave the table leaves down and just use the center piece as the base for styling, works well. I don’t want to overwhelm the the space with too much decor on the tabletop, so I chose some simple additions to decorate with, including my newest designer written coffee table book, by Jake Arnold, a paper mache bowl that I’ve had for years, filled with smaller vintage books, a set of glass candle holders, and a small vintage onyx box to hold matches. Oh, and the iron candle snuffer!
There you have it, friends. Simple changes to our home to bring in the cooler months to come. I am so excited to sit on the couch in front of the coffee table and watch the fire, yes it’s faux, flicker in the fireplace.
