One Room Challenge: Week Three
Welcome back friends! Boy what a week! Let’s just say it’s been “Hell Week” for me and my One Room Challenge design. Let me elaborate….
Countertops! Who knew this would be such a hard thing to tackle? Not I! That is until I decided that I wanted to take on another large project in our home in the next few months, where I’d prefer to put most of my cash instead. My original plan was to purchase a marble remnant from a local slab yard. The quote was pretty nice, and I was all for it until the new project came into play. That’s when I decided to save money and look elsewhere for countertops. I truly desired a stone countertop for the space, but I was open to wood and laminate too. Sadly after two weeks of trying to nail down a stone or laminate within my budget, I’ve come up empty handed. Well sort of. I’ve decided to take things into my own hands and build my own laminate countertop. I’ve purchased a sheet of Formica Brand Laminate from Lowe’s that should be delivered sometime next week. In the mean time I’ll be working on the build of the base of the countertop so I can tackle the application of the laminate ASAP when it’s delivered. Doing it this way will not only save me a ton of cash, I get a new tool out of it too! Needless to say, I’m pretty excited to get my product in and start the process, but I’m fearful that I’ll screw the entire thing up since it’s going to be my first time. I’ll probably buy a cheap sheet of laminate to practice on before I try it on the real thing. I need prayers for this one please!
Even though I felt like the countertop situation took up most of my time, I did get a lot done. I was able to build the cubbies I have been talking about, as well as get the planked wall up. I’m so happy that my husband was willing to help me with it all. It made the process go by a lot quicker, even though it took a good five or more hours to do it all. It was fun to work side by side with him. Even with our bickering we make a good team!
I also settled on a paint color for the walls, Behr Seagull Gray N360-1 and I love it! It’s bright and freshens up the room just as I had hoped.
Oh and we had the cabinet color matched so that we could paint the planks and cubbies to match. It looks good I think!
Of course, a One Room Challenge wouldn’t be complete without a trip to HomeGoods for decor! I was happy to find two options for my rug. I think I know which one I’m going to use, but the other just may make an appearance in another part of my house. Haha!
Looks like I can cross off some items on my list of things to do! Wohoo!
Decided on a paint color and paint the room.
Build, paint and install the cubbies along with crown molding.
Install a hanger rack.
Build or buy a drying rack and install it.
Install the plank wall detail and paint it.
Decide which countertop I want to go with and either build or order it.
Install lower cabinet.
Choose a light for the space. (We are still unsure if we want to keep or replace the current light fixture.)
Find decor for the room and decorate.
Until next time!

Thank you Melissa! We just got the materials in last night, so I’ll be working on it for the next few days. I’m scared though!

Hey Iris, I love what you’ve done and have to give me major kudos because I am not as handy as you! I’m sorry to hear about your set backs, but know this is minor and no matter what you’re laundry room is going to look so beautiful! You always inspire me and you know I love your style! Who knows, maybe I learn a thing or two from you and build the drying rack I need. Many thanks for the kind words! Let’s do this my friend! XOXO, Sarah

Aw Sarah, thank you! I love building, but I have to say I’m terrible at creating plans and sticking to them. I like to feel it out as I build, which leads to some interesting descriptions for “how to” tutorials. Haha! I’ll do my best this time though, because it really was easy! 🙂

I’m so in love with the paint color, and how you did the cabinets and planks and everything the same color. Looks gorgeous! Our mudroom is in such desperate need of a remodel- I’m living vicariously!

Thank you Laura! I’ve been daydreaming and planning this space out for about a year now, so each little project completed is just as exciting to me as the full reveal will be on week six. I can’t wait to show y’all! 🙂
